Nogizaka46 is a Japanese female idol group produced by Yasushi Akimoto, and it is billed as the “official rival” of the group AKB48.
Nogizaka46 was named after the place where the SME Nogizaka Building, which houses Sony Music Japan’s office, is located in. Their producer Yasushi Akimoto also said that the number “46” was chosen as a direct challenge to AKB48.
Nogizaka46 initially had 36 members, who passed the auditions for the group’s 1stGeneration. The 2nd Generation was announced on May 3, 2013 and assigned as Nogizaka46’s first generation of Kenkyuusei. Nogizaka46 has had a total of 49 original members during all its two generations. Currently, the group has 31 members, 7 kenkyuuseis, and 1 concurrent member.
